Hummingbird Friendly Garden Care
North Seattle, WA

Hello!
I’m Michael,
owner of

Harmony
Naturescaping.

I didn’t always love gardening. As a kid it was a chore. But there’s a moment I’ve never forgotten. Growing up in Santa Cruz, I spent a lot of time outside. One day in the woods I came across a hedge full of hummingbirds. Dozens of them, hovering and perching like bees in a hive. I had never seen anything like it and I’ve been fascinated by hummingbirds ever since. It would take many more years before I understood where that fascination would lead me.

Like many people, I found myself burned out and looking for a new direction in 2020. I had always wanted to start my own business, something successful without cutting corners or compromising on what matters to me. Around that time I began working for a small gardening company in West Seattle, and the owners took me under their wing. Over several years they introduced me to the work of Doug Tallamy and Cass Turnbull, founder of Plant Amnesty. They taught me everything from plant health and pruning to soil ecology and native habitat restoration. That mentorship shaped how I approach every garden I work in. Harmony Naturescaping grew from that foundation.

Today I offer organic and sustainable garden care with a focus on native plants, healthy soil and habitat support for hummingbirds and pollinators. No chemicals. No shortcuts. Just honest care for your garden and everything that calls it home.

  • Naturescaping is an approach to landscaping that works in harmony with the natural character of the land. It prioritizes native plants adapted to local conditions and arranges them in ways that reflect how they grow in the wild. By echoing the prairie, meadow, wetland and woodland that historically shaped a place, naturescaping helps gardens support local wildlife while fostering a strong sense of place and connection to the land.

  • In Seattle, the two hummingbirds you’re most likely to see are Anna’s and Rufous. Anna’s Hummingbirds live here year round, even through winter. Rufous Hummingbirds are migratory and return from Mexico each spring. Their numbers have declined in parts of the region, in part because Anna’s have expanded their range and now occupy much of the available habitat. Supporting both species through thoughtful planting and habitat design is an important part of my work.

  • Hummingbirds are drawn to tubular flowers and benefit from gardens that provide blooms across as many seasons as possible. Strong native options include red flowering currant, Oregon grape, salmonberry, penstemon, honeysuckle and fireweed. Red flowering currant is especially valuable for early spring when nectar sources are limited. For winter support, Mahonia and witch hazel help sustain Anna’s through colder months.

I also focus on plants that support the insects and spiders hummingbirds rely on for protein and nesting material. A good hummingbird garden is not just flowers. It’s a functioning ecosystem.

My work.

What I do.

Seasonal Tidying

Keeping your garden clean and cared for through each season. Cutting back spent growth, clearing debris, edging beds, line trimming, and making sure everything looks intentional. The kind of regular attention that keeps a garden feeling loved.

Specialty Pruning

Selective, thoughtful pruning that supports plant structure, flowering, and longevity. I prune with an eye toward blooming wood, nesting habitat, and the natural form of each plant. Not just what looks neat.

Hand Weeding

Careful hand weeding that protects soil life and nearby plantings. The goal is long term balance rather than constant disruption, creating healthier conditions for plants and pollinators alike.

Mulching

Strategic mulching to build living soil, retain moisture, and reduce weed pressure. Healthy soil is the foundation of everything else. It supports healthier plants, which support more birds, insects, and life.

Planting

Plant selection and installation focused on habitat, seasonal interest, and resilience. I choose plants that feed hummingbirds and pollinators while fitting the site, the design, and your goals.

Coaching

Guidance for gardeners who want to learn, plan, and participate. Whether you want help choosing plants, building a seasonal strategy, or just understanding what's happening in your yard, I'm here for it.
